Today is Nyepi—the Balinese New Year. It’s a day of silence, fasting, and contemplation. No one is allowed out of the house as you wait quietly for all the “bad spirits” to fly overhead and leave. It’s been nice not hearing the usual noise—no motorbikes and cars passing on the road; no hammering from the construction next door. The absence of the usual noise makes me realize just how much noise pollution there actually is! I’ve been enjoying the music of nature from the crickets, roosters, birds, geckos, and various humming of insects.
In preparing for Nyepi, many people told me to stock up on food because you’re not allowed to go out of the house AND all businesses are closed (including the airport!). So yesterday, my friends and I went to Bali Buddha to stock up on some snacks. And I’m so glad I did! I just sat on the bench that overlooks my garden and dipped pieces of bread into my jar of homemade peanut butter. I sat and started laughing at myself because if anyone were to witness me eating this way, they’d think I was rather uncivilized! Pieces of bread would break off from the weight of the peanut butter and float in the jar and I’d have to scoop it out with a chip 🙂 Yes, they have utensils available but it’s kinda nice eating like a bachelorette. I mean, when do you really get to enjoy your OWN jar of peanut butter? I can be as inconsiderate as I’d like and no one would care. I imagine that it looked atrocious but boy was it delicious! The Australian sharp cheddar was so yummy too—what makes it even more delicious is being able to leave it half eaten in the package 🙂 Ahhhh…the little joys in life.
