Cock of the Walk

In Nashville, Random Musings, Travel, Vacations on December 31, 2010 at 1:02 pm

One night I asked Jimmy how he liked to eat catfish and in a very matter-of-fact but serious tone, he said, “Catfish should ONLY be eaten fried.”…said it just like a true Southerner. So tonight, he took me to what is suppose to be the best fried catfish in Nashville: Cock of the Walk. Since I’ve just recently added fish to my diet again AND this was THE BEST place for fried catfish (apprently the ONLY way to eat it), I knew I had to try it. And I must say, it sure was tasty! It was served with hushpuppies (my first ever), and french fries. We were served skillet bread, of which was tossed and turned up in the air when our waitress brought it to us; along with a side of coleslaw, and pickled onions. We started out with a side of fried pickles, which are the best I’ve ever had!

YaYa’s first “snow experience” in Nashville

Concerning snow: Jimmy didn’t believe me when I told him that #1 I’ve never built a snowman…#2 I’ve never seen a snowflake…and #3 I’ve never made snow angels. There was such disbelief (on the verge of disgust) that I felt a bit ashamed. I went skiing ONCE in college when my boyfriend Tom took me to Snow Summit. It was the most terrifying experience (I’d highly recommend lessons before a first attempt). I’ve never skiied since but that’s beside the point. It snowed a little bit while I feared for my life that one time but I was so distracted with the possibility of breaking a leg or having my life end like Sonny Bono (not funny) that I didn’t (or, rather, couldn’t) enjoy the beauty of it all.
Tom was originally from New York and I got to visit a few times in the winter but it never snowed. Any other time I go away on vacation or travel, I’ve normally gone to hot tropical locations. So any chances of building a snowman or seeing a snowflake has been slim.
But it’s up there on my list of things to do before I die–right up there with catching a foul ball with my mit at a baseball game.

Shooting Range Distance

checking our targets

Got in yesterday and we did our ritual of going to Olive Garden after I got picked up from the airport. We never go to an Olive Garden in LA but it seems to be the thing we do here in Nashville.

Today, we took his family’s Remington .22-rifle to the shooting range for fun. I hadn’t been to a shooting range in well over 7 years! The last time I went was with my friend Dom from college. And it was a blast! It makes me feel so strong and capable. I think every woman ought to go to a shooting range and experience the exhiliration and adrenaline of hitting the target right in the jugular (that’s my aim).
I walked outta there feeling like I was a part of Charlie’s Angels. Errr…as close as I’ll ever be! We plan on going back…possibly shooting a handgun! Yippee!!
